Bring Your Story To Life...

One of the most valuable lifelong skills elementary students need to learn is the ability to read grade-level text with fluency and understanding.  Being able to simply “call words” does not help students succeed.  They must build background knowledge and have the academic vocabulary necessary for comprehension. This class will focus on exposing students to valuable strategies and thinking skills necessary for understanding increasingly complex text in content areas such as literature, math, social studies, and science.  Students will also build important writing skills and text response skills using Write From the Beginning and Beyond®, the writing sequel to Thinking Maps®.  We will also provide students with a basic framework for test-taking and how to effectively use the features in their textbooks.

Overview of Literacy Skills for this Class:

>  Phonics and Word Analysis:  Decoding and breaking down known and unknown words

>  Fluency: Increasing the amount of words that students can recognize and understand when reading

>  Vocabulary: Building academic vocabulary through direct instructional strategies

>  Comprehension: Understanding, interpreting and critiquing what students read

>  Study Skills: Developing effective note-taking, study, and research strategies

>  Writing: Developing and improving skills in various domains of writing including opinion, informative, and narrative

>  Speaking and Listening Skills: Working with peers, listening to directions, and sharing ideas
